Overview
Bachelor of Vocational degree program in Medical Laboratory Technology (B.Voc in MLT) is a skill oriented vocational degree program, instituted in the year 2014 to encourage the science students to pursue their studies in paramedical fields.
The course focuses on fundamental understanding of the make-up and the primary functions of the human body along with the allied aspects of Biochemistry, Microbiology, Communicative English and Languages in the initial semesters. Later semesters focuses on testing, medical instrumentation and other applied aspects.
Application of the knowledge gained helps the students to orient themselves with the medical laboratory techniques across various departments like phlebotomy, microbiology, haematology, microbiology, pathology during the final semester internship at various reputed hospitals.
Approved and recognized by the UGC, New Delhi, this course has been designed as per the guidelines of the Healthcare Sector Skill Council (HSSC) of the National Skill Development Council (NSDC), New Delhi.
Eligibility
A candidate who has passed two years of Pre-University Examination conducted by the Pre-University Education Board in the State of Karnataka or any other examination considered as Equivalent thereto by Bangalore University shall be eligible for this program. The candidate should have also studied Chemistry and Biology in +2 level.
Career Prospects
The Medical Lab Technician course trains students to work as full-fledged lab technologists capable of collecting and storing samples, analyzing them and creating reports.
The course includes elements of blood bank management, materials management, supply chain management as well as lab information system management.
Graduates from this course are trained to clean and maintain lab equipment, manage biomedical waste and adhere to quality control standards as per the NABL regulations.
Medical lab technicians and technologists, play an important role in collecting information, sampling, testing, reporting and documenting medical investigations.
Employability
A candidate with B.Voc in MLT can easily fit in private hospitals/govt. hospitals/ clinics/ nursing homes/ diagnostic labs as technologist/technician, Laboratory manager/Consultant/supervisor, Healthcare Administrator, Hospital Outreach coordinator, Laboratory information system Analyst/Consultant, educational consultant / coordinator etc.
